Awards for environmental initiatives in shipping
At the 2009 awards, Fabian Jurs from SkySails collects the awards for Environmental Technology of the Year from Don Gregory from EGCSA
The Sustainable Shipping awards, first presented in 2009, are being repeated for 2010.
The organisers, www.sustainableshipping.com, believe that despite the apparent disappointment of COP15, shipping will continue to come under the environmental spotlight. The COP15 debate will have a large impact on future discussions in IMO, US and the EU, and as such Sustainable Shipping suggests that COP15 has changed the setting for future negotiations regarding shipping and the environment.
With a potential cap and trade legislation in US Senate in early 2010 which is expected to cover bunker fuels in a wider carbon tax regime as part the Kerry-Boxer bill and further high level climate conferences in Bonn, Germany and COP16 scheduled for Mexico in November, the process of negotiating a global deal will once again be attempted.
The 2010 Sustainable Shipping Awards will look to celebrate the efforts that are continually being made to address and improve the environmental legacy throughout the shipping industry. Hosted on 24 June 2010 at London's Cumberland Hotel, the event will attract shipping companies, regulators, technology companies, environmental companies and related stakeholders. As the industry continues to look at new measures such as alternative marine fuels and technologies to reduce emissions levels, the awards will recognise industry companies and individuals who have made significant strides to positively tackle environmental issues and work towards a lasting sustainable legacy for shipping.
Nominations are being sought, and a panel of judges will decide on a variety of awards ranging from ocean environmental protection, to clean air, and environmental technology. 2009 winners included AP Møller Mærsk for shipping operator of the year, Skysails for environmental technology of the year and the Green Ship of the Future project for the green initiative award.
