Offshore orders for ballast treatment system
An OptiMarin ballast system, similar to those ordered for eight new offshore vessels
Norwegian company OptiMarin says that since the beginning of 2010 it has received a total of eight orders for its ballast water treatment system.
The orders for the type approved OptiMarin ballast system have been placed by major shipyards on behalf of the shipowners, and cover installations in:
· Four platform supply vessels that ‘K’ Line Offshore is building at STX Norway Offshore, Brevik. The vessels are of the STX PSV 06 CD design and the technical management of the vessels is entrusted to OSM Shipmanagement.
· Two AHTS vessels that Siem Offshore is building at Kleven Maritime. These vessels are of the VS 491 CD design.
· Two AHTS vessels that ‘K’ Line Offshore AS is building at STX Norway Offshore in Langsten.. The ships are of the STX AH 12 CD type and the technical management of these vessels too is being handled by OSM Shipmanagement.
OptiMarin says that by choosing to install ballast water treatment systems according to the IMO International Convention for the Control and Management of Ship’s Ballast Water and Sediments, 2004, the owners show the will to take a leading role in preventing the transport of micro-organisms in ballast water. The company considers that these orders from major ship owners show that the market for ballast water treatment systems is starting to develop.
The OptiMarin Ballast System is based on the principles of simplicity, flexibility and ease of installation and operation on board newbuilds and existing vessels. It is a mechanical system based on filtration and UV and does not affect the normal operation of the ship. The system is said to be one of few treatment options that operate without chemicals, electro-chemical generators or biocides in the treatment process.
The type approval certificate has been issued by DNV on behalf of the Norwegian Maritime Administration and confirms OptiMarin’s compliance with the IMO Convention.
