Bringing the latest developments worldwide – repair and maintenance are more important now than ever before

These are interesting times for shiprepair and conversion. On the one hand, an excess of tonnage is likely to send older, sub-standard ships to the scrapheap, so less industry effort will be expended on keeping such vessels afloat.

On the other hand, ship design has changed little in recent years. Although high-efficiency designs are emerging, even comparatively new ships still conform to the norms of 30 years ago. So a well-maintained older ship can closely match the efficiency of a newer one, at cheaper rates. And it is not difficult to upgrade engines and systems to improve efficiency further, so for conscientious owners and progressive repair and conversion yards, older tonnage is still attractive.
