The IHC Merwede shipyard in Krimpen aan den IJssel, The Netherlands, recently delivered a trailing suction hopper dredger to the Belgian dredging company DEME (Dredging, Environmental & Marine Engineering) Group.

The contract for the design, construction and delivery of the vessel was signed in June 2010, and the keel was laid on 15 November 2010. Named Breughel after Pieter Breughel, the famous Flemish painter, the design of the newbuilding is based on the successful trailing suction hopper dredgers Brabo and Breydel, delivered by IHC Merwede in 2007 and 2008 respectively.

The limited draught (7.30m), combined with large width (28m), ensures that the Breughel can be used in conditions where other ships of this class would be restricted. The vessel’s one-man operated bridge is equipped with the latest SAM Nacos Platinum console, which combines both the dredging and sailing functions.

Weighing in at 18,440dwt (at a maximum dredging draught of 9.10m), the vessel has a hopper capacity of 11,650m3, a suction pipe diameter of 1,200mm and a dredging depth of between 28m and 43m.

Propulsion power is provided by two Wärtsilä medium speed diesel engines, one 8L32 and one 12V32 with an output of, respectively, 4.000kW at 750rpm and 6,000kW at 775rpm. These drive two Berg CP 950 four-bladed 4m diameter propellers delivering a maximum 4MW at 140rpm shaft speed for a 14.8 knot service speed. Auxiliary power is by means of a Cummins KTA38 D(M) genset producing 970kW at 1,800rpm.

Two Van der Velden marine systems rudders, Bra 34-47-15, are operated by a single Brusselle Enterprises hydraulic steering gear HMSE 240 R0/4. The vessel has accommodation for 14 people.
