New tools for e-Navigation preparation and ship tracking
The screen shot demonstrates the ship information available with Jeppesen Fleet Manager, showing the status of the ship from the coloured indicators - green showing that everything is operating within accepted parameters and red being something that might require attention.
Jeppesen Norway, part of Boeing, says that it has launched a new resource for the maritime industry, to help shipping companies prepare for the IMO’s mandatory carriage requirements for ECDIS and e-Navigation implementation plan.
This platform, at www.e-navigation.com, provides information about technical concepts, rules, new developments and trends. It is further intended to offer the maritime community a place to ask questions and discuss how industrial and regulatory developments relating to ECDIS will affect their operations.
“e-Navigation and mandatory ECDIS will impact everyone in the shipping industry for a generation, as it involves using all the capabilities of technology to empower ships’ operators and improve decision-making. We believe that this idea has tremendous potential, with links to efficiency, safety and a simpler interface for navigators,” said Willy Zeiler, marketing and communication manager for Jeppesen.
Also on view at SMM from Jeppesen was a new maritime fleet management information system known as Jeppesen Fleet Manager. The web-based system provides shore-side managers with up-to-date data on ships' progress according to plan and real-time conditions, and provides analytic tools using data from each ship’s passage to help ship owners more efficiently manage their fleets. It is designed to integrate with other Jeppesen navigational products and services, including C-Map charts and Jeppesen’s Vessel and Voyage Optimization Solution (VVOS).
The tool assesses the passage of each ship, comparing progress in terms of distance covered, time used and fuel consumed, or according to the specific terms of a charter party agreement.
The system provides office personnel with an interactive display of the ship's progress presented on professional navigational charts, with the potential for weather overlay.
"One of the key differentiators between Jeppesen Fleet Manager and competing systems is the program’s ability to track a ship's performance against charter party terms or pro forma," said Ron Moody, product manager for Jeppesen Fleet Manager. "Both for the operator and the charterer, there is now clear documentation about the voyage."
Additionally, Jeppesen Fleet Manager can integrate with Jeppesen VVOS (Vessel and Voyage Optimization Solutions) to provide a comparison of planned route and historical track, predicted ETA and variance figures, severe motion and weather warnings and slow-down alerts.
