Principal / senior engineer - ports and maritime
Mott MacDonald are a leading player in advising on the planning, design, procurement and implementation of port and maritime infrastructure. We work across a wide range of marine terminals - from oil and gas facilities, dry bulk and container terminals, through to naval bases, cruise and ferry terminals, fishing harbours and marinas. In particular our container business is growing rapidly and we are now seeking an experienced engineering professional with particular capabilities in the planning, development and construction of container terminals.The job offers global opportunities to work on a range of projects - from the largest deep sea terminals for the latest range of super post panamax vessels, through to smaller multimodal facilities on inland waterways. It requires an understanding of landside and marine operations within a modern container terminal, particularly those associated with the world's leading terminal operators. The role will require the ability to plan the terminals, and to design the infrastructure associated with them. It will be challenging, demanding, varied and offer fantastic opportunities for skill and career development.
We need an individual with experience across a wide range of projects and clients in different settings within the container sector and who can use such experience to participate in and/or lead various stages of port engineering projects from project screening, concept development, terminal planning, strategy evaluation, feasibility studies, detailed design, procurement and administration of construction contracts through to asset management and residual life assessment. The role will require an individual who can manage project teams and elements of work, supervise more junior staff, produce technical deliverables and liaise directly with clients ranging from financial institutions to port authorities and terminal operators.
We also require the individual to contribute to and lead in the preparation and submission of bids and undertake general business development through liaison with clients and industry suppliers.
From time to time we expect the role to include supporting teams delivering the planning and design of port infrastructure for terminals including oil, gas, bulk materials, general cargo, cruise and ferries.
You will be able to demonstrate strong technical knowledge in the container sector and more generally within port and maritime civil engineering since gaining chartered status. You will be in possession of relevant academic qualifications.
You will have much of the following:
*Demonstrable experience in the container sector
*A solid understanding of land side and marine side operations within a container terminal
*An ability to undertake terminal layout planning
*An understanding of capacity evaluations; experience in determining capacity opportunities and overcoming bottle necks both land side and marine side
*An understanding of the intermodal nature of the container sector and terminal/hinterland interface
*Experience in the use of terminal simulation software would be an advantage
*A solid understanding of terminal operating and container handling equipment
*Understanding of current container vessel technology
*Thorough experience in the design and specification of port/maritime civil engineering infrastructure
*A background within a consulting engineering practice
*Demonstrable team leadership and project management experience
*UK and international experience
*Client-facing experience with terminal operators and port authorities
*Flexibility to travel overseas for project work
