31st Motorship conference promises to be best ever
22 May 2009
The 2009 Motorship Propulsion & Emissions conference, to be held in Copenhagen on 26/27 May, is set to be the best ever in the event's 31-year history. The venue, at the Radisson SAS Scandinavia Hotel, will be packed out with experts from the shipping and marine engineering industries, as, uniquely, all delegate places were sold out several weeks before the event.
According to Bill Thomson, Editor of The Motorship magazine: "The theme of the event, Saving fuel for lower costs and lower emissions, has never been more appropriate than it is now, when shipowners are facing both a credit crunch and ever-tightening environmental legislation." He adds: "The timing and location of the conference is particularly apt, coming a few months ahead of the 2009 UN Climate Change Conference, also in Copenhagen, when emissions from transport, including shipping, are expected to be included for the first time in future global emissions targets."
Some 28 presentations will focus on various aspects of saving both fuel and air pollution, dealing with a vast range of topics, which include exhaust gas scrubbing, ship performance analysis, propellers, fuel and lubrication technology, and advanced propulsion techniques. The event will conclude with a shipowners' discussion session, dealing mainly with carbon and sulphur emissions, before the delegates and speakers adjourn to a tour of the MAN Diesel House Museum. Papers include the first European presentation of CSNOx, a new emissions abatement system from Ecospec of Singapore, and another thought-provoking speech from Jorn Winkler of the Dutch DK Group.
The event will be chaired by John Aitken, of SEAaT (Ship Emissions Abatement and Trading, the cross-industry emissions reduction group). The keynote address will be given by Neils Bjorn Mortensen, BIMCO's chief marine affairs officer.
A highlight of the two-day conference will be a gala dinner, at Solyst, the historic home of the Royal Copenhagen Shooting Society.
An impressive list of industry sponsors and supporting organisations have lent their names to the event.
