A project to containerise a Ballast Water Management System may allow easier compliance for vessels with limited space.

Ballast Water Containers Ltd (BWC) has containerised a Wärtsilä Aquarius AQ-250-UV Ballast Water Management System allowing it to be deck mounted on barges and ships.

“The successful project execution represents further cooperation between our two companies developing a reliable containerised ballast solution,” said Craig Patrick, sales director Wärtsilä BWMS.

The BWC Bute mobile ballast water management system is designed to be used in a number of ways - as a permanent deck mounted retrofit, as a mobile deck mounted system, or as a port based shared system.

It can be installed as a semi-permanent retrofit onto the deck of the vessel, with simple pipe and electrical modifications required to connect it to the vessel’s systems.

Preparatory works can be carried out whilst the vessel is trading, with the final retrofit carried out alongside at a time and location convenient to the vessel's trading pattern.

For vessels operating on fixed routes, or vessels seldom trading internationally, there is the option of using a shared mobile ballast water management system rather than retrofitting each vessel in the fleet.

The system can be simply lifted on and off each vessel as required to treat the ballast water prior to sailing or on arrival.

For use within a port and combined with other BWC products, the BWC Bute ability can be shared between many vessels calling at the port.

Testing of the Wärtsilä AQUARIUS UV Ballast Water Management System will now be carried out using the new containerised version.
