Daewoo wins German order for wind turbine vessels

04 Dec 2009
South Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering has won a $300 million order from a unit of German utility firm RWE Innogy to build two wind turbine installation vessels. The two vessels are slated for delivery at the end of 2011.

RWE is said to be pursuing plans for offshore windfarms off the German and UK coasts. In placing the order, RWE Innogy board member, Frtiz Vahrenholt, commented that it was difficult to charter such specialised vessels.

As orders from the downturn-hit shipping industry dry up, special purpose vessels such as dredgers, research ships and others provide a small active market for shipyards in South Korea.
