DSME to build chemical tankers
02 Sep 2010
Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) has secured a $320m contract to build eight chemical carriers for Woodside Holding International Shipping in Singapore for delivery between the second quarter of 2012 and the third quarter of 2013.
The eight 12,000m3 vessels will be 140m long and capable of carrying an array of chemical cargoes including LPG, ethylene and 18 other chemicals. The newbuildings will be built as semi-refrigerated vessels, and will be able to carry ethylene at temperatures of -40° C.
The deal marks the first time DSME has won an order for this kind of small and medium chemical carriers under 20,000m3. Based on the experience gained with this order, DSME is hoping to create a new market for large size chemical tankers where South Korean rival Hyundai Mipo is currently the dominant player.
