MAN Diesel and Turbo has won a contract to supply the first shipset of GenSets for the multipurpose, offshore patrol vessel, Pattugliatore Polivalente d’Altura (PPA), programme.

The contract also includes an option for six more vessels, each vessel will feature four 12V175D GenSets, each delivering 1,640kW.

“We already have several 175D test installations in operation but this is really the breakthrough for the engine,” said Lex Nijsen, head of four-stroke marine at MAN Diesel and Turbo.

He added: “Its excellent performance data and fuel consumption figures have created huge interest in the market and we are looking forward to following its development.”

The newbuild vessels have been ordered as part of the Italian Navy’s fleet renewal programme, Programma di Rinnovamento, which aims to modernise the Italian fleet, allowing older vessels to be retired in the process.

MAN Diesel & Turbo has furthermore won the order to supply main and auxiliary engines for a logistics support ship (LSS) and landing helicopter dock (LHD).

The PPAs are flexible vessels and have the capacity to serve multiple roles. With a top speed of over 32 knots, they can host a crew up to 180 people.

MAN 175D GenSets will, on account of the demanding operating conditions, feature double-elastic mounting and, in the Aft Machinery room only, sound enclosures.

In addition to the engines and their related plant equipment, MAN Diesel & Turbo will also supply, in the Aft Machinery room only, its in-house-designed SCR system to ensure an environmentally friendly footprint.

“The MAN 175D is compact, reliable and efficient - properties that are of essential importance for use on working vessels to allow safe maneuverability in the most challenging and roughest weather conditions,” said the Project Lead responsible for the MAN 175D, Dr Matthias Schlipf.

He concluded: “The business case behind it also has to be right for the customer. And this is where the engine sets standards in more than just fuel consumption. Our aspiration is to make the MAN 175D the overall most efficient engine throughout its lifetime.”
