Wärtsilä gensets for five Chinese ships

Five new COSCO container vessels will be equipped with twenty Wärtsilä Auxpac 32 generating sets Five new COSCO container vessels will be equipped with twenty Wärtsilä Auxpac 32 generating sets

Wärtsilä is to provide a total of 20 generating sets for five 14,500 teu container vessels under construction at the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Group yard for China Ocean Shipping Group (COSCO).

The order is the first for gensets placed with Wärtsilä Yuchai Engine Co, the power group’s joint venture with Yuchai Marine Power Company formed in 2012. Delivery of the engines will commence in mid-2016.

The customer's requirements for the container vessels were cited as being reliability, economic fuel consumption and high availability. Auxpac 32 is aimed at large container vessels with an auxiliary power need of from 2500kWe to 4500kWe per generating set. It is available in six to nine-cylinder configurations and is able to operate on LFO and HFO as well as low or ultra-low sulphur fuel oils. The engine is compliant with IMO Tier II, and reaches Tier III when fitted with exhaust gas treatment solutions.

"This is a very important order that marks the re-establishment of Wärtsilä generating sets within the container vessel market,” said Roger Holm, senior vice president, Wärtsilä Ship Power.

Wärtsilä Yuchai Engine Co in Zhuhai serves the Chinese shipbuilding industry and is aligned with China's government plan to significantly increase local production of marine equipment.
