ClassNK's register has grown rapidly

Chairman and president of classification society ClassNK, Noboru Ueda, recently announced that its register has exceeded the 8,000 ship milestone.

As of the end of August 2012, the society’s register now totals 8,036 ships of 206,927,557gt. The register which topped 6,000 ships in 1989 and 7,000 ships in 2008 has surpassed the milestone with the addition of more than 1,000 ships in the past four years.

ClassNK has grown rapidly due to newly built vessels and the large number of ships transferred from other classification societies.

According to IHS Fairplay information, ClassNK has nearly three times as many bulk carriers on its register than the next IACS member society and is the leading class society for tankers and second for container carriers in terms of ship numbers.
