Damen has signed a contract with Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) to build 14 Damen ASD tugs.

The tugs have been based on original Damen designs but have been customised to meet KOC’s requirements in terms of layout, systems and performance. The new vessels form part of KOC’s plans to increase the country’s export capacity, for which significant investments are being made to expand marine facilities in coming years.

Martin De Bruijn, area director, Middle East, Damen, told The Motorship: “Damen are very proud to be involved once again in such a major newbuilding project for such an important repeat customer. We look forward to working closely with the KOC team on delivering a successful project.”

Under the contract, Damen will build two types of tugs: nine of Damen’s recently launched 3212 model and five of the existing 2810 design. They will assist tankers at near shore loading terminals and offshore at new single mooring points and will also be equipped with a fire fighting system.

All 14 vessels will be constructed by Damen Shipyards Galati in Romania and are expected to be delivered from 2014 onwards.
