Damen opts for Schottel

The new 30-tonne harbour tugs of the Damen ASD Tug 2009 series are to be equipped with Schottel propulsion systems.

The signing of contracts at the EUROPORT shipping fair in Rotterdam on 10 November 2011 marks the beginning of a new chapter in the propulsion specialist’s long success story in the field of tug propulsion.

The tugs are to be built at the Damen shipyard in Changde (China) and will each be fitted with two 895kW Rudderpropellers of type SRP 550 FP. The first systems for the tugs, which are approximately 20m long and 9m wide, are due for delivery in the summer of 2012.

Damen’s purchasing director Cees van Dijk and Coen Boudesteijn, product director tugs and workboats, explained that the decision to use Schottel propulsors was based on being fully satisfied that the system met the technical requirements for this new tug type, and that Schottel is also in an excellent position to provide after-sales service worldwide.
