Wärtsilä has developed new digital identification technology that helps to improve component traceability and it is in the process of implementing it.

The new identification technology reduces piracy and will help Wärtsilä to keep track of components’ life cycle and reduce non-conformity costs, thus supporting Wärtsilä’s strategic growth and efficiency objectives.

Michele Cafagna, general manager, product data management, Wärtsilä, said: “Product safety is our first priority and this new solution helps us in ensuring that our customers in the marine and power industry get the quality they have learned to expect from Wärtsilä.”

Wärtsilä’s technology has been developed to meet the latest requirements for customers in the marine and power industry and also the requirements that classification societies have for the traceability of most critical components.

The digital identification solution involves marking each critical part selected for tracing with a Unique Item Identifier (UII) that includes a data matrix code which can be read digitally. The codes are registered by the Wärtsilä ERP system when the parts are delivered and then linked to the correct engines during the manufacturing process.

This means that Wärtsilä customers in the marine and power industry will be able to verify the authenticity of Wärtsilä engine components by scanning a digital data matrix code. The aim of course is to enhance product quality and increase product safety by preventing counterfeit products from being sold as genuine Wärtsilä components.

With suppliers of critical components introducing the new digital marking and tracing system, it will enable Wärtsilä to integrate key business processes across the supply chain.
