With the delivery of PSV No5, ‘World Opal’, Damen’s six-ship series for WWS is nearly complete

Damen Shipyards Group delivered the fifth platform supply vessel, ‘World Opal’, in a series of six, to World Wide Supply of Norway on December 5.

The ships are to Damen’s PSV 3300 CD design. The first ship, World Diamond, was delivered in July and the last in the series, to be named World Sapphire, is due to be delivered mid-December. Four of the six WWS PSV 3300s have secured long-term contracts in Brazil, supporting Petrobras. The remaining two are expected to be offered to the North Sea spot charter market.

The 3300 is one of a range of new-design Damen PSVs. It is 80.1m in length, and can carry a deck load of 1,500t. In addition to transporting crew and equipment to and from offshore platforms, it offers fire-fighting and oil pollution recovery capability. Equipped with azimuth thrusters and DP2 dynamic positioning system, the design features slender hull lines to meet challenging conditions, minimise fuel consumption and to enhance crew comfort. The design work was assisted through extensive CAD/CAM modelling by Damen’s in-house design office, and validated by model testing at Maritime Research Institute Netherlands (Marin).
