French yard secures much needed work

04 Aug 2010

STX France Lorient and STFMO (Société de Transports Fluvio-Maritimes de l'Ouest), a subsidiary of Sablières de l’Atlantique, have recently signed a contract for the construction of a 2,000 m3 sand dredger.

This order is the first placed with STX Lorient in Brittany since 2008 and will bring a workload of over 100,000 hours to STX staff and subcontractors. The owner claims that the 84.10m x 15.60m newbuilding will be capable of extracting sand from the sea off the French Atlantic coast at depths of up to 40 metres. It said that the vessel would enable it to work further out to sea and in deeper water, as well as to reduce fuel consumption and environmental impact. Construction will start early 2011 with delivery of the ship to STFMO scheduled for mid-2012.
