Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) boosted its expertise in product design by winning prizes at Red Dot Design Award 2010 in Germany.

The winning products were the HiMSEN medium speed diesel engine (18H32/40V) and the ship monitoring system ACONIS-DS (advanced control & integration system). About 4,252 products from 57 countries were entered in one of the world’s most prestigious design competitions this year.

The HiMSEN engine is an environmentally friendly model boosting higher output and lower fuel consumption. At this competition the engine’s slick and solid design was highly rated as being innovative. The engine has also won design awards at the 2010 International Forum (iF) Design Award in Germany and the 2009 PIN UP Design Award in Korea.

The ACONIS monitoring system’s user friendly design is characterized by high-intensity LEDs and a high-strength acrylic front panel.

“The design became a major factor to determine product value, as much as the quality. We will continue to develop innovative product design through constant research and development,” said Lee Chung-dong, HHI’s chief operating officer of R&D center.

In 2000 HHI set up its in-house design institute to develop product designs for its business units.
