MAN Diesel had a new high speed engine on display at the recent SMM show in Hamburg; the vehicle-derived D2868 LE421 is a fully classified marine diesel for medium- and heavy-duty operation.

The engine employs common-rail technology to meet most applicable exhaust-gas standards. MAN says that the D2868 is its first eight-cylinder high-speed engine with common-rail technology for medium- and heavy-duty operation, and it offers improved fuel consumption with lower noise emissions. With full classification by the major societies, it is now ready to join its light-duty sister variant, the D2868 LE423, on the market.

The heavy-duty rated D2868 LE421 is intended for applications requiring up to 100% full load over unlimited periods with output of 600bhp at 1,800rpm, for reliable operation with minimal service costs and low fuel consumption. It is targeted at tugs, push boats and heavy working vessels, and will be made available for delivery from the first quarter of 2013.

A further new version, the D2868 LE422, is offered for medium-duty operation with up to 3,000 operating hours per annum of which 50% are at full load. The D2868 LE422, which is similarly available fully classified as well as non-classified, delivers 800bhp at 2,100rpm. It replaces the non-classified D2848 LE422 and outputs 10% more power than the latter at the same speed. It is designed for passenger vessel, fishing boat and patrol boat applications.
