MHI’s 16-cylinder engine has notched up 10,000 sales

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) says that it has reached the milestone of 10,000 unit sales for its 16-cylinder diesel and gas engine, since the original product launch in 1989.

The S16R diesel engine was the first of the series to be launched, with a marine version following shortly afterwards. The marine engine is targeted at the high speed vessel sector, intended to replace the gas turbine engines that were mainly used at that time. The GS16R gas engines were developed next. The complete portfolio ranges in output from 1,000kW to 2,000kW.

The 10,000th sale was marked by a ceremony at the MHI Sagamihara plant in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, where the engines are manufactured.

MHI says that it is currently involved in development of a low emission S16R variant which will adopt common rail fuel injection alongside electronic control, which the company hopes will help expanding both domestic and global market shares.
