Global marine solutions provider, Wärtsilä, has received type approval for its Aquarius UV Ballast Water Management System (BWMS).

The company received the approval, which is in accordance with teh 2004 IMO Convention for the control and management of ships ballast water and sediments, from the Flag Administration of the Netherlands. The Aquarius UV became part of the Wärtsilä portfolio following the acquisition of Hamworthy plc in January 2012.

Joe Thomas, director, Wärtsilä Ballast Water Management Systems, said: “Receiving type approval for the Wärtsilä Aquarius UV BWMS is a significant achievement. It has been a real team effort from Wärtsilä and Hamworthy engineers to secure Type Approval of the Wärtsilä Aquarius UV within just two years.”

The Aquarius UV is based on a two stage treatment process – seawater is first passed through a back washing screen filter, then through a UV chamber which disinfects the water before entering the ballast tank. On discharge, the water is passed through the UV chamber for a second time to complete the disinfection process.

Mr Thomas added: “There is already significant market demand for our BWMS as owners look to prepare their ships ahead of the regulatory implementation."
