Wärtsilä will retrofit its open loop scrubber systems to three more Color Line cruisers

Wärtsilä will retrofit its open loop scrubber systems on three more Color Line cruise vessels helping to confirm its leading position in the scrubber market.

Mr Jan Helge Pile, SVP marine & technical, Color Line Marine, said: "Color Line sees environmental issues as a priority and the use of Wärtsilä exhaust gas cleaning systems on another three of our vessels is a significant step towards our goals in this respect.”

The scrubber contract is for the company’s SuperSpeed I, Color Magic and Color Fantasy vessels. Superspeed I sails between Norway and Denmark and the others link Oslo in Norway with Kiel in Germany.

Each vessel will be fitted with four systems designed to rid the ships of harmful sulphur oxide (SOx) emissions and particulates.

The systems will enable the vessels to comply with current and anticipated environmental legislation in line with Emission Control Areas (ECAs).

They work by allowing the sulphur oxide formed in the exhaust to react with seawater to form sulphuric acid. The natural alkalinity of the seawater then neutralises the acid to allow it to be safely discharged at sea.

This order follows on from a similar one placed in June 2013 to retrofit Color Line’s SuperSpeed II ferry.
