Wärtsilä launches innovation contest

26 Oct 2015

Wärtsilä has launched an innovation contest called Wärtsilä Marine Mastermind, which aims to find and develop new and unique digital services from international start-up companies and entrepreneurs.

The contest is open to existing companies as well as aspiring entrepreneurs and the winner will get to develop their service further with the support of Wärtsilä's experts and Shift Actions, who specialise in agile concept and product development.

Wärtsilä said that the point behind the contest is to build closer relationships with these innovative companies and support the growth of Wärtsilä's customers' business.

Tero Hottinen, general manager, business innovation at Wärtsilä Services, said: "The innovations we are looking for in the contest can for instance bring efficiency gains, better usability, improve transparency of operations to the customer or enhance safety. Only the imagination is the limit.”

More will be revealed about the contest at Slush's Clean Solutions event in Helsinki on 12 November 2015.

But the winner of the contest will get to experience a 30-day agile "Lean Innovation Lab" product or service development sprint supported by Shift Actions.

The sprint is focused on the challenges of innovation, development of the concept for commercialisation, its prototyping as well as the business plan and its implementation plan.

Submissions for the contest should be sent to Wärtsilä by 31 December 2015.

The winner will be announced in March 2016 and will be chosen by an international jury consisting of Wärtsilä's own experts and investors, as well as distinguished representatives of the marine industry.
