ABS declares Crowley-Aker tankers LNG ready
ABS has issued the first LNG-ready approval to a product tanker in accordance with its Guide for LNG Fuel Ready Vessels.
The approval was issued to the first vessel in a new series built by Aker Philadelphia Shipyards and operated by Crowley Maritime Corporation.
“This milestone builds upon our work to provide owners with the guidance and support they need to move ahead with shipbuilding projects that allow them the flexibility to respond to changes over the lifetime of their vessels,” said ABS chairman, president and CEO, Christopher J Wiernicki.
By complying with the guide Crowley now has the option to convert its product tankers to LNG propulsion at a later date.
The Guide for LNG Fuel Ready Vessels was published in 2014, it allows shipowners and yards the flexibility to limit their initial investment while planning for the future conversion to dual fuel or gas-powered combustion engines
This can prepare shipowners for the ever-increasing strict environmental regulations and help them save time and money in the future.
Rob Grune, SVP and general manager of petroleum services at Crowley, said: “As our business continues to shape itself - the vessels stand ready and able to operate on a cleaner, alternative fuel source are our way of anticipating future demands."
Scott Clapham, of Aker Philadelphia Shipyard, concluded: “Working with ABS and Crowley to build the first LNG-Ready product tanker has been a valuable process and has allowed the shipyard to deliver a vessel with the flexibility to evolve in the future.”
