GasLog order marks dual-fuel century for WinGD
WinGD has reported the hundredth sale of its X-DF series of dual-fuel, two-stroke engines as part of an order for gas carrier owner GasLog.
The operator has specified two 5X72DF main engines for its recent order with Samsung Heavy Industries for another 180,000m3 gas carrier, adding to its existing fleet of eight similarly equipped vessels – including three recently delivered newbuilds.
“WinGD’s X-DF engines were the choice for our new vessels and we continue to be confident in their low pressure dual fuel technology,” said, Richard Sadler, chief operations officer, Gaslog. “When we select an engine, the most important considerations are the contributions to the safety, competitiveness, sustainability and reliability of the vessel for our customers.”
“If ever there was confirmation that the shipping industry is embracing LNG as the first choice for IMO compliant engines, the hundredth order X-DF dual-fuel engine is proof,” said Rolf Stiefel, vice president of sales and marketing, WinGD. “With over 12,000 running hours logged on the first WinGD dual-fuel engine in operation [Terntank’s Ternsund] and over 100,000 running hours accumulated for the full X-DF equipped fleet of 13 vessels, the performance, benefits and reliability of WinGD’s low-pressure technology is proven.”
Stiefel noted that X-DF technology is gaining ground in the tanker and containership market as well as taking a leading position in the newbuild gas carrier market – a trend epitomised by CMA CGM’s decision last year to select X-DF technology for nine ultra-large containerships to be delivered in early 2020.
X-DF engines operate on the lean-burn Otto cycle, which requires low-pressure gas injection as opposed to the high pressure demanded for Diesel-cycle engines.
