Shell to supply first US LNG Carnival ships
Shell will supply Carnival Cruise Line with liquefied natural gas (LNG) for North America’s first fully LNG-powered cruise ships.
Carnival’s ships, built with a next-generation ‘green cruising’ ship design, are expected to launch in 2020 and 2022 and will be fuelled through Shell’s ocean-going LNG Bunker Barge (LBB), the first of its kind in the US, which will allow these ships to refuel with LNG at ports along the southern US east coast.
“This agreement is a significant stepping stone in our relationship with Carnival Corporation building upon our previous LNG marine fuel supply agreements in Europe,” said Tahir Faruqui, president of Shell NA LNG, LLC. “It also marks a milestone as we continue to establish the marine LNG fuel market in the U.S. as a credible part of the global marine fuel mix.”
Largest Carnival ships
The 180,000-tonne ships will be the largest in Carnival’s fleet and fully powered by LNG both while in port and at sea for cleaner emissions and improved air quality.
Shell has secured a long-term charter agreement with Q-LNG Transport, which built and own the 4,000-cubic metre capacity LBB, due to be operated by Harvey Gulf International Marine, LLC.
The LBB features a transfer system which enables it to load LNG from big or small terminals and bunker a variety of customers.
Shell and Carnival’s deal builds on the partnership established between Carnival’s AIDA Cruises brand and Shell in April 2016 to supply AIDA’s AIDAprima ship with LNG to power the vessel while docked.
The partnership was extended in autumn 2016 when Carnival signed an agreement with Shell to supply LNG for the first of its next-generation LNG ships from its European AIDA Cruises and Costa Cruises brands.
