Caterpillar Marine Power Systems reports that a MaK and Cat power solution comprising four main gensets and one auxiliary is employed onboard the ‘USNS Howard O Lorenzen’, a T-AGM 25 missile range Instrumentation ship.

The Lorenzen is powered by four MaK 12M32C diesel electric propulsion engines, each delivering 5.5MW of rated power. A Cat C32 diesel generator set provides emergency power. Caterpillar says that this contract represents the largest Cat engine installation on a US governmental vessel, as well as being the largest Cat engines delivered to any US government or military branch.

The MaK engines, which will be built at the company’s Rostock plant in Germany, feature a clean, HFO capable, fuel-efficient long-stroke design in addition to a compact generator set. The company claims that customers can achieve longer intervals between service, reducing overall costs of ownership.

“We are honoured to provide propulsion and ship-service power for the Lorenzen vessel and thank the United States Navy for their support,” said Darrell Kuhne, Caterpillar marine programme manager for the project. “We are confident the combined Cat solutions will deliver stellar performance while powering the vessel through successful naval missions for years to come.”

The 163m Lorenzen was built by VT Halter Marine and will be crewed by a blend of government and civilian personnel. The vessel was delivered to the Military Sealift Command and formally accepted by the US government in January 2012. Once fully operational, the vessel will conduct a variety of missions on behalf of the U.S. government.
