New training scheme for ECDIS

08 Mar 2011

Transas Marine’s simulation and on-board systems divisions have joined forces to launch a global ECDIS training network, known as GET-Net.

The company says that with ECDIS mandation on its way and the new STCW ECDIS training requirements in force from 1st January 2012, the shipping industry is facing a challenging environment. Bearing in mind the international nature of most crews, Transas says it is desirable to offer standardised ECDIS training in different locations - using GET-Net, a shipping company can train locally, thus saving travelling costs while getting a standardised course of guaranteed quality.

Transas GET-Net is described as “an international partnership between Transas Marine and outstanding ECDIS training providers worldwide”. All partnering training centres receive a detailed instructor training and quality audit. The actual training is based on a Germanisher Lloyd certified course which follows the ECDIS IMO Model Course 1.27 and incorporates the latest amendments to STCW. The first partner training centres are Interschalt (Hamburg and Manila), Cosmos (Athens), eIM (Piraeus) and MSG (Hamburg).

Bjoern Roehlich, training manager, Transas Marine comments: “The GET-Net idea is to create a triple win situation for training centres, our ECDIS customers and Transas itself. Together we offer a variety of options; shipping companies can choose preferable training type and location and benefit from the high quality set by Transas Marine and its partners. It is also an answer to the increased responsibility for ECDIS training put on the makers by Flag States and Marine Administrations like the latest MCA MIN 405”.
