Satellite system given to training ship
Marlink’s Sealink VSAT hardware onboard the ‘Gann’
Satellite communications provider Marlink says that it has donated a Sealink VSAT system to the Norwegian maritime training vessel Gann. which provides training programmes to prepare school leavers for a career at sea.
The Sealink hardware will provide Gann with up to four voice channels and always-on bandwidth to support a range of applications, enabling students and teachers to stay in touch via the web-based learning system ‘It’s learning’. In addition, the services will ensure students are able to stay in touch with family and friends while at sea.
Marlink CEO, Tore Morten Olsen, commented: “The MS Gann project provides superior training for young people seeking a career at sea. This is a vital process in expanding the number of skilled crew available which is a constant concern for shipping operators. I am delighted we have been able to support this exceptional initiative with the donation of our Sealink service.”
Jostein Vik, electrician and teacher aboard the Gann said: “People working in the global maritime sector now rely heavily upon connectivity for a range of applications from everyday email and voice calling, to more advanced and technical functions such as transfer of critical data to offices ashore. It is also essential for us to offer crews the provision of reliable satellite communications aboard our vessel, to enable students gain valuable true-to-life experience, which is vital to the success of the programme.”
