Second Schlumberger ship at LWB

A second 93m offshore platform supply ship chartered by Schlumberger has arrived at Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven (LWB) for conversion into a well-service vessel, reports Tom Todd.
The 4,600dwt Island Captain joined sister ship Island Centurion, which has been at LWB since last October undergoing what the yard earlier described as “complex and costly” conversion.
Schlumberger told The Motorship last year that it had selected Lloyd Werft to “convert two newly-built and chartered platform supply vessels, owned by Island Offshore, into state of the art well-services vessels for operation in the North Sea” from 2013.
No further details of the conversions have since been officially revealed and only with her arrival now at LWB has Island Captain been confirmed as the second ship.
The Motorship understands that the ship will remain at Lloyd Werft until about the end of the year. Sources said the conversion of Island Centurion, originally due for completion by about mid this year, would now last until about October because additional work had been commissioned.
Earlier LWB MD Ruediger Pallentin said the conversion of Island Centurion "demands all our know-how, experience, flexibility and engineering knowledge. It is a complicated conversion into a specialised vessel of the highest quality”.
The two 20m wide Schlumberger ships were built at Norway’s STX OSV Brevik Shipyard in 2011/12 for Island Offshore. They belong to a series of UT 776 CD supply vessels for general deck or liquid cargo transport and boast 1,000 m² of deck area. They are driven by four RRM Bergen C25:33L 6ACD main engines. Two later ships in the same series, Island Contender and Island Crusader, are billed as the first offshore supply vessels to operate in DP2 mode without using diesel and with Rolls-Royce designed lean-burn, gas-powered engines.Island Captain is the latest in a string of offshore repair and conversion orders taken by LWB lately. The yard has also just re-entered the offshore newbuilding sector with an order to build the 33,000gt construction and pipe-laying ship Ceona Amazon for delivery late 2014.
