VLG eying Baltija Shipyard
21 Aug 2009
The Lithuanian shipbuilder Western Shipyard (VLG), owned by the BLRT Group in Estonia, is considering the acquisition of the Baltija Shipyard although VLG's boss Arnoldas Sileika said that any statements on the acquisition were premature.
Sileika said that Klaipeda-based VLC would wait until AP Moller-Maersk officially announces the sale of the Baltija Shipyard in Lithuania before seriously considering the acquisition. Maersk last week decided it would sell the shipyard when it announced the end of shipbuilding activities at the Odense Steel Shipyard.
Baltija is capable of building turn-key newbuildings up to 115 x 18.2 m and reaching a steel construction output of nearly 50,000 tonnes per annum. Until recently, the yard's production was concentrated on the construction and outfitting of superstructures and hull blocks for containerships being built at Odense and Volkswerft Stralsund.
