You will be working towards becoming a Naval Architect/Structural Engineer by gaining experience in engineering projects whilst producing technical documentation for the company. Naval Architects and Structural Engineers are key roles within MMC and is integral to the success of our projects

Role and Responsibilities

Your key responsibilities in this role will be:

  • Carrying out structural analysis under guidance from more senior members of staff including but not limited to sea-fastening and grillage designs, deck strength checks and jig design
  • Carrying out basic Naval Architecture tasks under guidance including but not limited to stability analysis, load-out plans and mooring analysis
  • Create computer models in various software packages to aid analysis above including

o Autohydro hull models for consultancy projects

o Strand7 FEA models for structural designs

o Orcaflex models for mooring analysis both static and dynamic and deployment analysis

  • Attend site visits, meetings and operations both within the UK and abroad assisting more senior staff
  • Ensure company Health, Safety and the Environment requirements are met at all times
  • Ensure company Quality Assurance requirements in relation to this work are met at all times

  • Increase you knowledge and skills

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Technical Aptitude – role requires the ability to learn various software packages and solve complex engineering problems
  • Practical Outlook – role requires the ability to apply engineering knowledge to real world problems
  • Diligent – delivery of successful projects is reliant on staff being responsible and ensuring their tasks are carried out properly and on time
  • Clean Driver’s License – required for attending meetings and site work

Qualifications and Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 2nd Class degree BEng or higher in Naval Architecture & Engineering or Small Craft OR relevant degree in engineering subject at 2nd class level minimum or equivalent OR lesser degree with preferred skills and experience below
  • 2 summers relevant work experience in industry as a student preferred
  • Relevant post-graduation work experience is of benefit

Physical Demands

The job requires that you are physically able to

  • Communicate effectively on the phone, in person and via email
  • Sit or stand at a desk and operate a computer via keyboard and mouse
  • Travel to meetings in UK and abroad independently

In addition there is the requirement for you to attend on site and you should be physically capable of the following:

  • Standing for long periods of time
  • Working in inclement weather
  • Accessing ships and barges via gangways and ladders
  • Working long (12 hour) shifts

Work Environment

You can expect to be performing the responsibilities of this job in an mixture of office environment and site environmentSite attendance may be requested at short notice.

Site environments include

  • Ports, for managing sub-contractors and site meetings
  • Exposure to the elements, heavy plant, cranage and unprotected edges

Ships/Barges for managing sub-contractors and site meetings

  • Exposure to the elements, heavy plant, cranage, hot works, unprotected edges and enclosed spaces

Other environments you will have to work in include:

  • Client’s Offices for attendance at meetings and secondments
  • Exposure to an office environment that company have no control over

Fabrication sites

  • Exposure to hot works, overhead cranage and high noise environment

All necessary PPE and training will be provided by the company before you are asked to work in high risk environments.
