ABS AiP for SDARI MeOH-fuelled Ultramax design
A methanol-fuelled Ultramax bulker design from Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute (SDARI) was granted Approval in Principle (AIP) by ABS in late 2023. The design for the 65,000 dwt bulk carrier was jointly developed with Lemissoler Navigation Ltd. and was noteworthy as it represented the first such methanol-fuelled design for China’s shipbuilding industry.

Maersk and Port of Yokohama ink methanol supply MoU
A.P. Moller - Maersk (Maersk) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) related to a potential methanol supply agreement with a Japanese supplier, Mitsubishi Gas Chemical, and the municipal authorities responsible for the port of Yokohama in late December. The deal is intended to study ways of supplying methanol and green methanol as marine fuels.

Maersk eyes first green methanol supply from China
A.P. Moller - Maersk (Maersk) signed the first large scale green methanol offtake agreement for the global shipping industry with a Chinese supplier, Goldwind, in late November. The deal for the supply of up to 500,000 tonnes of green methanol per year will see production begin in 2026.

First methanol bunker vessel for Singapore handed over
The first dedicated methanol bunkering tanker that will operate in the port of Singapore has been handed to Stellar Shipmanagement Services Pte Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Global Energy Group. The delivery of MT Maple was marked by a delivery ceremony in Osakikamijima, Hiroshima, Japan, on 13 December 2023.

Ulstein Specifies MeOH-Ready 175D Engines For Offshore Newbuildings
Ulstein Verft AS, the Norwegian yard, has ordered 2 × 3 × MAN 12V175D-MEV methanol-ready engines in connection with the building of two CSOV (Commissioning Service Operation Vessels) for Bernhard Schulte Offshore (BS Offshore), the offshore unit of international shipping corporation, Schulte Group. The vessels are designed to support the offshore wind-energy market, and are planned for delivery in 2025; an option for four additional vessels exists.

Alfa Laval to Develop Methanol FSS for MAN Four-Stroke Portfolio
MAN Energy Solutions has announced an agreement with Alfa Laval, the Swedish industrial concern, to develop a methanol fuel-supply solution for MAN four-stroke engines and its fuel-injection technology. As a result, the first four-stroke engine types will be capable of retrofit to methanol operation from 2025.
