DNV GL and New Dayang agree bulker design JDP
DNV GL and SUMEC’s New Dayang Shipbuilding Co., Ltd have agreed to a Joint Development Project (JDP) to update the Crown 63.5k Bulk Carrier design. The agreement, which follows a strategic cooperation agreement signed between SUMEC Marine Company Ltd. and DNV GL last year, was signed at the Nor-Shipping trade fair in Oslo.
The project will cover the application of the new harmonized common structural rules (HCSR) to the design, and enhancing the design's energy efficiency, focusing on the machinery and electrical systems. The JDP also includes a broader assessment of different propulsion systems for bulk carrier designs, in terms of the impact of future environmental requirements on Capex and Opex requirements.
“The Crown 63.5k Ultramax design has been very popular and successful with over 100 vessels built to date,” said Mr Xu Gang, General Manager of SUMEC Marine Co., Limited. “This JDP with DNV GL will enable us to continue to offer customers an attractive design, but with even higher energy efficiency, new smart features, and the latest standards. DNV GL, as the world’s leading classification society, has been an invaluable partner, through their innovative outlook and focus on safety, digitalization, and efficiency.”
“We are very pleased to be working with New Dayang Shipbuilding on this project,” said Norbert Kray, DNV GL’s Regional Manager Greater China. “New environmental regulations will put pressure on many owners to improve the performance of their vessels, while maintaining compliance to safety standards, and through this JDP we will work to help address these needs.”
