DSME LNG carriers for Yamal LNG
Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) has won a tender for the construction of ARC7 ice class tankers for the shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
DSME will build up to 16 tankers for OAO Yamal LNG, which is currently owned by Russia’s Novatek (80%) and Total (20%), for its LNG project, located on the Yamal Peninsula, northwest Siberia, Russia.
The ARC7 ice class LNG carriers will be designed for temperatures of up to -50°C and independent navigation in ice more than 2.1m thick.
Under the terms of the agreement, DSME will optimise the hull design of the vessels and conduct model tests to improve the overall tanker performance.
The agreement also allows transfer of rights to finance the tankers’ construction and sell the tankers to third parties – shipping companies chosen by Yamal LNG.
The new vessels will be used to deliver LNG produced by the Yamal LNG project to international markets.
The Yamal LNG project, which will have an annual capacity of 16.5m tonnes based on the feedstock resources of the South Tambeyskoye gas field, consists of approximately 200 wells at 19 well pads, a gas gathering pipeline system, gas treatment facilities and a liquefaction plant.
A jetty with two tanker loading berths, which will be equipped with ice protection facilities, will be built at the Port of Sabetta.
