Chantiers de l’Atlantique wins fifth RCCL cruise order
French shipbuilder Chantiers de l’Atlantique has signed an agreement for a fifth order from cruise operator Royal Caribbean Cruises (RCCL) for an Edge-class ship. The vessel is scheduled for delivery in autumn 2024.
“Chantiers de l’Atlantique has been a brilliant partner and we look forward to creating another amazing vessel with them,” said Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, President and CEO, Celebrity Cruises.
“After the four Millenium-class ships at the beginning of 2000’s and the four Edge-class ships, this is the ninth ship ordered by Celebrity Cruises at our shipyard and it will be the 24th vessel built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique and operated by RCL. This is a real testimony of the exceptional level of cooperation we reached together,” said Laurent Castaing, General Manager, Chantiers de l’Atlantique.
The order is the fifth of the current series of Edge-class vessels currently under construction at the shipyard. The first vessel, Celebrity Edge, was delivered in 2018. Three other Edge-class ships are scheduled for delivery in 2020, 2021 and 2022.
At 140,600 gt, and with an overall length of 327 metres, the fifth vessel will be 20 metres longer and around 10,000 gt heavier than the Celebrity Edge. The new vessel’s draught and beam (39 metres and 8.2 metres respectively) will be largely unchanged.
The previous four vessels in the Edge-class have employed diesel-electric power and propulsion systems featuring medium-speed engines and a pair of Azipod azimuthing propulsors. The vessels were fitted with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems and scrubbers to meet environmental standards.
This new order is contingent upon financing.
