Fincantieri delivered a sixth cruise ship for Viking, the Viking Jupiter, at its shipyard in Ancona on 7 February. The 47,800gt Viking Jupiter has 465 cabins with accommodation for 930 passengers.

Designed by experienced naval architects and engineers, including SMC Design and Rottet Studios, the design and onboard safety systems comply with the navigational and Safe Return to Port (SRtP) regulations.

Furthermore, the vessel features high-efficiency engines, hydro-dynamics and a hull optimised for maximum fuel efficiency.

The Viking Jupiter features Rolls-Royce’s Promas propulsion and manoeuvring system (comprising propeller, hubcap, rudder bulb and rudder). The Promas system integrates propeller and rudder into a hydrodynamically optimised single unit, and can increase propulsive efficiency by 3-8% for single-screw vessels and up to 2% for twin-screw vessels.

In common with Viking’s previous small cruise ships, the Viking Jupiter is powered by two 5,040kW MAN 9L32/44CR and two 6720kW MAN 12V32/44CR diesel engines. It is also equipped with two electric propulsion motors having a combined capacity of 14,500kW. The vessel also features advanced SOx emissions reduction technologies to ensure the vessel meets the strictest environmental regulations.

Fincantieri started its partnership with Viking in 2012, and has orders for a further 10 units, options included, for Viking Cruises between 2021 and 2027.

The company also confirmed an order from Viking for two special cruise ships to be built in the Group’s yards in Norway. Fincantieri’s Vard subsidiary is specialising in the construction of expedition vessels.
