United European Car Carriers (UECC) has signed a contract with China Ship Building Trading and Jiangnan Shipyard Group to build two new generation pure car truck carriers (PCTC).

The vessels will be equipped with a battery hybrid LNG solution, enabling UECC to exceed IMO’s target for a 40% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030.

“This is a giant leap towards decarbonisation and unlike anything else that has been done previously in our industry and something that we are extremely proud of,” said UECC’s chief executive, Glenn Edvardsen.

The PCTCs will have a length overall of 169m, width of 28m and capacity for 3,600 cars on ten cargo decks, of which two are hoistable. Additionally they will have a quarter ramp of 160 tonnes safe working load and a side ramp of 20 tonnes safe working load and can accommodate cargo units up to 5.2m high.

The carriers will meet the Tier 3 IMO NOx emission targets coming into force from 2021 and, to meet 2021 CO2 reduction regulations, the vessels will be equipped with dual-fuel LNG engines for main propulsion and auxiliaries.

To cut CO2 emissions further, the vessels will also be equipped with battery packages and UECC aims to use carbon neutral and synthetic fuels as part of its future fuel mix.

Delivery of the first carrier is expected in 2021 and the contract has options for a further two vessels.
