{"id":3447,"date":"2012-12-11T15:31:00","date_gmt":"2012-12-11T15:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mercator.nfdtesting.uk\/propulsion-and-future-fuels-conference\/2012\/12\/11\/the-single-oil-solution-debate-rages-on\/"},"modified":"2026-08-26T22:27:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T21:27:08","slug":"the-single-oil-solution-debate-rages-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.motorship.com\/propulsion-and-future-fuels-conference\/news\/general-news\/the-single-oil-solution-debate-rages-on\/","title":{"rendered":"The single oil solution debate rages on"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sulphur content is known to help with cylinder lubrication and some, such as Castrol and MAN, say that different grades of engine oil are needed in future, matched to the fuel type.<\/p>\n<p>This was the theme of MAN Diesel&#8217;s recently issued customer service letters, which Total Lubmarine has expressed concern over.<\/p>\n<p>Lubmarine and others, such as Mobil, believe that they can make an oil that works with varying fuel sulphur content a \u2018single oil solution\u2019 and regard the MAN and Castrol approach as old fashioned.<\/p>\n<p>MAN\u2019s technical documents recommend that single oil solutions are approved for the vast majority of existing engines \u2013 99% of current engines \u2013 but not yet for the 1% of engine represented by the long stroke Mark 9 and future G series.<\/p>\n<p>Jean-Philippe Roman, technical director, Total Lubmarine, said: \u201cSeveral of the new \u2018single oil solution\u2019 type products that have been launched recently, demonstrate that conventional wisdom on cylinder oils is moving away from old generation products and towards a high-performance future. Five years of hard, corroborated evidence has shown that the Universal product gives excellent results under all operating conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, Mr Roman adds that the single oil solution offers significant savings as only one product is required.
