{"id":3825,"date":"2014-10-15T12:51:00","date_gmt":"2014-10-15T11:51:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mercator.nfdtesting.uk\/propulsion-and-future-fuels-conference\/2014\/10\/15\/mepc-67th-session-opens\/"},"modified":"2026-08-26T22:30:06","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T21:30:06","slug":"mepc-67th-session-opens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.motorship.com\/propulsion-and-future-fuels-conference\/news\/general-news\/mepc-67th-session-opens\/","title":{"rendered":"MEPC 67th session opens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>IMO Secretary-General Koji Sekimizu addressed delegates at the opening of MEPC 67 first commenting on the regulatory work of the organisation so far, \u201cin tandem with capacity-building efforts, to mitigate the threats to the world\u2019s seas and oceans\u201d. He also touched on some of the challenges the organisation is facing as they relate to the Global Ocean Committee\u2019s report <i>From Decline to Recovery: A Rescue Package for the Global Ocean<\/i>, and its recommendations on sustainable use of the global oceans, \u201cwhich I regard also very important for the future sustainability of international shipping\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The major topic on the agenda of the 67<sup>th<\/sup> session is that of the Ballast Water Management Convention. Since MEPC 66, five additional States \u2013 Japan, Jordan, Tonga, Turkey and the Republic of Congo \u2013 have become Contracting Parties. The total number of ratifications now stands at 43 countries, representing around 32.54% of world merchant shipping tonnage. Thirty-five percent of global tonnage will trigger the Convention into force.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Sekimizu said these latest accessions are an important milestone, bringing the Convention significantly closer to entering into force.<\/p>\n<p>The new sub-committee on implementation of IMO instruments finalised its work on the draft Guidelines for Port State control under the 2004 BWM Convention.
