The WST-14 is part of the W\u00e4rtsil\u00e4 Steerable Thruster (WST) compact series, aimed primarily at tugs, AHTS and coastal and inland waterway cargo vessels. For the newest WST portfolio, W\u00e4rtsil\u00e4 said it began the type approval process from the earliest possible moment, which should allow significant cost savings as well as reductions in production time. DNV-GL approval of the prototype design is said to be an important step towards full type approval, and confirmation that the design calculations meet class requirements regarding standard operations, as well as for operations in ice conditions (ice class certification).
