{"id":4029,"date":"2015-12-11T14:06:00","date_gmt":"2015-12-11T14:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mercator.nfdtesting.uk\/propulsion-and-future-fuels-conference\/2015\/12\/11\/wartsila-power-for-arctic-icebreakers\/"},"modified":"2026-08-26T22:32:03","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T21:32:03","slug":"wartsila-power-for-arctic-icebreakers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.motorship.com\/propulsion-and-future-fuels-conference\/news\/propulsion\/wartsila-power-for-arctic-icebreakers\/","title":{"rendered":"Wartsila power for Arctic icebreakers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The icebreakers are under construction at the PJSC Vyborg Shipyard in Russia and are being built for Gazprom Neft, based in St.Petersburg.<\/p>\n<p>Johan Hanst\u00e9n, area sales director at W\u00e4rtsil\u00e4, said: &#8220;Once again W\u00e4rtsil\u00e4 has been chosen based on the company&#8217;s experience and strong track record in supplying highly efficient and reliable solutions for icebreakers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese vessels operate in the toughest possible conditions and it is, therefore, important that the power generators selected are the best available.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The ships will operate in arctic conditions with outside air temperatures as low as minus 50\u00b0C and ice thicknesses up to 2metres.<\/p>\n<p>Challenging operational considerations, the reliability and overall efficiency of the W\u00e4rtsil\u00e4 machinery were prime considerations in the award of this contract.<\/p>\n<p>The ability of the W\u00e4rtsil\u00e4 engines to operate efficiently with such low air suction temperatures will aim to provide the basis for an arctic package solution.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;W\u00e4rtsil\u00e4 is well known and respected in the Russian shipping industry and we are very pleased to cooperate with them in this important project,\u201d said Sviridov Maxim, director of Marine Electric Mechanical Dept, Ruselprom Group.<\/p>\n<p>He continued: \u201cWe see enormous potential in this partnership with W\u00e4rtsil\u00e4, a company with great experience that provides proven, reliable, and technologically advanced products and systems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruselprom Group and W\u00e4rtsil\u00e4 signed the contract in October.
