{"id":4313,"date":"2017-04-27T17:34:00","date_gmt":"2017-04-27T16:34:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mercator.nfdtesting.uk\/propulsion-and-future-fuels-conference\/2017\/04\/27\/white-paper-on-bilge-water-non-compliance\/"},"modified":"2026-08-26T22:34:55","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T21:34:55","slug":"white-paper-on-bilge-water-non-compliance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.motorship.com\/propulsion-and-future-fuels-conference\/news\/regulation\/white-paper-on-bilge-water-non-compliance\/","title":{"rendered":"White paper on bilge water non-compliance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Even if a traditional system with type approval is operating on board, the paper states, there are still risks of violating applicable laws and damaging the marine environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that ship owners and operators want to comply with bilge water regulations,\u201d said Niclas Dahl, vice president, Marine Separation &amp; Heat Transfer Business Unit, Alfa Laval.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also know that there are problems associated with conventional systems even if they are type approved and we want to make to ship owners aware that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alfalaval.com\/products\/separation\/centrifugal-separators\/separators\/purebilge\/?utm_source=Wake+Media+Master+List&amp;utm_campaign=9bbdc454f0-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_04_25&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_c91fb95122-9bbdc454f0-418922797\" target=\"_blank\">white paper<\/a> calls for a marine industry review of the current bilge water regulatory environment and the need to evaluate test protocols that do not reflect actual operating conditions.<\/p>\n<p>One protocol, for instance, only requires the test to take place for 2.5 hours and the use of a fluid mixture that contains fresh water, oil and only one chemical at stable land facility.<\/p>\n<p>During actual operating conditions however, bilge water is treated continuously and often contains a more complex chemical mixture with emulsions.<\/p>\n<p>Violation of bilge water regulations leads to stiff fines and\/or imprisonment for those found guilty of inadvertent or deliberate misconduct.
