The W-type bulker encapsulates twice the enclosed cargo volume and nearly double the deadweight relative to the Arklow Bay design on a 30m increase in overall length and 4m-wider beam.

The A-series made its debut in 2019 when Arklow Abbey entered service, followed in January by Arklow Accord and this month by Arklow Ace, with three sisterships due over the next seven or eight months. Two box-shaped holds suited to the gamut of agricultural and industrial commodities in intra-European trade provide an underdeck volume of 349,700ft3, with extra loading flexibility afforded by a portable bulkhead.

The main engine is a six-cylinder version of the compact MaK M25 medium-speed diesel, rated in this application at 2,000kW, supplemented by two 220kW Yanmar auxiliaries. Manoeuvrability essential to coastal and river port working is enhanced by a 380kW bow thrusters and Becker flap rudder.

The 149.5-metre Arklow Wood strengthens the fleet at its higher-capacity end, the W-generation being exceeded in size only by the company’s two handysize bulkers. The two-hold configuration comprises a 266,000ft3 intake in No1 hold and 430,000ft3 in No2 hold, and incorporates moveable bulkheads with multiple placing points. The tank top can accept loading at 20t/m3, giving scope for denser cargoes such as steel coils and forestry goods.

As with the A-class, the propulsive power installation is also from Caterpillar Motoren in Germany, in the shape of an eight-cylinder MaK M32C engine turning out 3,840kW, and driving a Berg controllable pitch propeller through a Keller reduction gearbox. The propeller is ducted for improved thrust at lower speeds and reduced maximum power requirement. The at-sea electrical load is covered by a 750kW shaft generator, complementing the 350kW Yanmar genset.

Arklow’s policy of continual fleet capacity renewal and development is also expressed in a series of six newbuilds of 5,150dwt on the Ferus Smit workload, occupying delivery slots through 2022 and 2023.

PRINCIPAL PARTICULARS – Arklow Ace and
