Tru-Marine to learn from aviation excellence

Singapore-based turbocharger service specialist Tru-Marine is hoping to learn about cutting-edge processes and techniques deployed by a leading aircraft engine service company as part of an 18-month structured programme.

Singapore Aero Engine Services, a joint venture between Rolls-Royce and Singapore Airlines, uses similar technologies to overhaul and repair components for Trent aircraft engines as Tru-Marine does for reconditioning turbochargers for marine engines. The ‘mentorship’ will enable Tru-Marine to improve its service by cross-referencing the aviation sector’s more stringent quality benchmarks.

David Loke, founding and group managing director, Tru-Marine, said: “This gives us the rare opportunity of exposure to the world’s pre-eminent engineering service expert, allowing us to discover new disruptive approaches and service innovations. For our clients, this translates into reducing down time and maintenance costs.”

The programme is supported by the Advanced Remanufacturing and Technology Centre, an initiative intended to fast track the development of advanced manufacturing and remanufacturing. The centre is a project of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research, in partnership with the Nanyang Technological University and industry partners.

Tru-Marine commits around 3% of its annual sales to research and claims to have introduced at least one new repair technique every two years. Recent achievements include 3D printing a marine turbocharger nozzle ring using metal alloy in 2015, and the launch of its High Velocity Oxygen Fuel Coating (HVOF) technology in earlier this year.
