Using an abundant, if toxic, resource to power the maritime fleet.	A mature future fuel already in use - but will it become dominant?	Numerous NGOs protested against the IMO earlier this year putting biofuels in its Global Fuel Standard, but the “fuel versus food” debate seems to have been solved by deriving fuels from waste.	Technically the cleanest possible fuel source available to the maritime world and one that has the longest history, dating back to the 1950s. Why is it not in common, non-military use?	LNG is currently the most popular lower carbon fuel, but with bio and e-LNG it could move beyond its current transition fuel status supported by extensive existing infrastructure.

1,000th communications network manager shipped

KVH Industries of the USA has announced the shipment of its 1,000th CommBox ship/shore network manager, which it says marks a trend for increasing integration of onboard IT networks and shipboard satcoms.

KVH's CommBox offers network management for commercial mariners via its two hardware options, the R8 and C2 (pictured)

The CommBox functions as e-mail server, relay server, and web server in one package. It features two shipboard hardware options, a choice of value-added software modules, and is claimed to work with all maritime communications services (including mini-VSAT Broadband, Inmarsat Fleet and FleetBroadband, GSM cell service, and all compatible hardware for these services).
