Wärtsilä ammonia combustion research progresses

Wärtsilä has successfully proven the concept of using ammonia as a fuel, and is moving to test the combustion of ammonia in spark-ignited gas and dual-fuel test engines. The company intends to begin field tests with ship owners as soon as 2022.

Wärtsilä’s testing of ammonia as a viable fuel for shipping forms part of its future fuels development programme.
