There’s enough interest from shipowners in ammonia as a fuel that engine designers and classification societies are pushing forward with addressing its poor combustion properties, toxicity and corrosiveness, but not everyone wants to be an early mover, and the solutions are having to factor that in as well.

MAN Energy Solutions' 4T50ME-X test engine, which will serve as the platform for the ammonia engine development, on its way to MAN ES’s Research Centre Copenhagen (RCC) facility in 2020.
