Design modification offers increased Flettner fuel efficiencies

A theoretical study conducted by wind-assisted ship propulsion specialist Blue Wasp Marine has offered encouraging results, indicating that a relatively small change to the design of a Flettner rotor can significantly increase its aerodynamic performance.

The modelling suggests that modifying a Flettner rotor with a flap can increase fuel savings of around 3 percentage points.
